The best time for leaf removal
In South Jersey, most leaves come down from late October through early December. If you only want one visit, book it after most of the trees are bare, usually mid to late November. If you have a lot of trees, two or three visits through the fall keep the leaves from piling up and matting down on the lawn.
Book early. Fall is the busiest time of year for cleanups, and the schedule fills up fast once the leaves start dropping.
Why leaves shouldn't stay on the lawn
A thick layer of wet leaves blocks light and air, smothers the grass and invites mold and disease. By spring you can end up with thin, dead patches. Wet leaves piled in beds and against the house also hold moisture and attract pests.
What a fall cleanup includes
A full fall cleanup usually covers leaf removal from the lawn and beds, clearing leaves from under shrubs and along fences and foundations, blowing off driveways, patios and walkways, picking up sticks and branches, cutting back perennials, and hauling everything away.
In the spring, a cleanup focuses on what winter left behind: debris, cutting back ornamental grasses, pruning, edging beds and fresh mulch.
One visit or several?
Smaller yards with a few trees usually only need one leaf removal once the trees are bare. Properties with a lot of trees, especially wooded lots, do better with two or three visits through the fall, so the leaves never get deep enough to smother the lawn.
